OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reinstated to the board after wrongful removal is verified

Sam Altman joins OpenAI’s board after an independent investigation found his conduct “did not warrant removal.”

A special committee of the OpenAI board announced the completion of the review and expressed full confidence in Altman and Greg Brockman’s continued leadership of OpenAI.

Law firm WilmerHale interviewed board members, employees and reviewed “more than 30,000 documents” to reach its conclusion. “We have unanimously decided that Sam and Greg are the right leaders for OpenAI,” said Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s board chairman, in a statement early Saturday.

Altman will continue as CEO on OpenAI’s board. OpenAI’s board also announced the election of three new board members as part of the expansion commitment.

They are Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former director and general counsel of Sony and CEO of Sony Entertainment; and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chairman of Instacart and on Shopify’s Board of Directors.

“Their experience and leadership will enable the board to oversee OpenAI’s growth and ensure we are following OpenAI’s mission to ensure the benefits of general AI for all of humanity,” said Taylor.

The board is prioritizing crucial work to streamline governance procedures to best achieve the goal of OpenAI. “We understand the importance of our role in driving transformative technologies for the global good,” added Taylor.
